For most travellers, the best day trip south of Lisbon is not a checklist of every stop on the Setúbal Peninsula. Trying to fit all of them into one day usually means more time in the car than in the places you came to see.
Choose Arrábida and Setúbal for beaches, dolphins and wine
Arrábida and Setúbal are the right choice if you want the side of Lisbon most visitors miss: turquoise coves below the mountain, wild bottlenose dolphins in the Sado estuary, grilled fish in Setúbal and Moscatel wine in Azeitão. It is close enough for a full day from Lisbon, but the logistics are different from Sintra or Cascais because the coast road and beach access change by season.
Choose Sesimbra for boats, caves and a fishing town
Sesimbra fits travellers who want a simpler sea-focused day: a working fishing town, a castle above the bay, seafood on the waterfront and boat tours into the Arrábida Natural Park for caves, snorkeling and hidden beaches. It pairs well with Cabo Espichel or a short Arrábida viewpoint route.
How to plan a day trip from Lisbon without wasting the day
- Beach + dolphins: start in Setúbal, take a morning Sado dolphin trip, then spend the afternoon at Figueirinha, Albarquel or the Arrábida coast.
- Wine + viewpoints: cross the 25 de Abril bridge, visit an Azeitão cellar, then drive the Arrábida ridge road and finish with Setúbal or Sesimbra.
- Sesimbra + caves: go straight to Sesimbra, take a boat trip along the park coast, then add Cabo Espichel or the castle if you still have time.
Do you need a car, public transport or a guided tour?
A car helps outside summer, but it is not always the easiest option. In the 2026 bathing season, Setúbal's Arrábida Sem Carros programme runs from 4 June to 15 September and restricts private-car access to key beach roads during the day. Public buses and licensed tour vehicles are the practical workaround, especially for Figueirinha, Creiro, Galápos and Portinho da Arrábida.
