Things to do in Setúbal

Setúbal rarely makes the standard Lisbon itinerary, and that's part of its appeal. This working port on the Sado estuary is the base for boat trips out to the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, and the ferry to the white sands of the Tróia peninsula leaves from here.

The Livramento market is one of the best fish markets in the country, and the local dish is choco frito — fried cuttlefish, eaten by the waterfront. From Setúbal you're minutes from the Arrábida coast and its turquoise coves, which makes the city a practical base for a day on the water or the beach.
